Is bigger always better? Designing economically feasible ocean thermal energy conversion systems using spatiotemporal resource data

چکیده
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) produces electricity using the temperature difference between warm surface and cold deep-sea water. OTEC systems in literature only limitedly consider seasonal seawater variations thus might not be adequately sized for off-design conditions. This potentially leads to techno-economically sub-optimal design choices. paper sheds light on which approach yields most economically feasible system considering conditions with 19 years of data 3-h time steps. We find that worst-case thermal resources yield highest steadiest production. If are moderate, these also perform best terms Levelized Cost Electricity (LCOE). demonstrate our model a 136 MWgross plant Ende, Indonesia, an LCOE 15.12 US¢(2021)/kWh against local tariff 15.77 US¢(2021)/kWh. The is validated different cost assumptions, sizes, profiles useful globally. give recommendations curb costs move large-scale closer today’s state art, e.g. by multiple smaller pipes instead few large pipes. prove OTEC’s global economic feasibility promote technology’s commercialisation.

متن کاملIs Bigger Always Better ? The Effect of Size on Defaults
Analyzing a large sample of Italian firms we find that the probability of default increases with size. This contrasts with the common observation, based on measures of exit from business registry data, that firms’ death rate is inversely related to the scale of their operation and suggests a rethinking of the economic role of larger companies. متن کاملBorn Large for Gestational Age: Bigger Is Not Always Better.
D uring the past 60-90 years, there has been a change in the growth trajectories of large for gestational age (LGA) babies and the associated health effects later in life. Subjects classified as large at birth in the 1920s were found to have reduced morbidity and mortality in their seventh decade compared with those born of lower birth weight. Indeed, across the birth weight range there was a p...
متن کاملThermal power plant efficiency enhancement with Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
In addition to greenhouse gas emissions, coastal thermal power plants would gain further opposition due to their heat rejection distressing the local ecosystem. Therefore, these plants need to enhance their thermal efficiency while reducing their environmental offense. In this study, a hybrid plant based on the principle of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion was coupled to a 740 MW coal-fired powe...
متن کاملIs bigger better?
What is medical science all about? Surely it is about the value chain, which begins with basic research and ends—if there is an end— with a useful product. There is a widespread perception that scientists do a lot of basic research, but neglect the application of their findings. To remedy this, a number of organizations and philanthropists have become dedicated advocates of applied or translati...
